What Makes Us Special

Calvary Baptist Church is an autonomous body of baptized believers, choosing to affiliate themselves with Baptists of like faith, known as Southern Baptists. Since 1947, Calvary has maintained a thriving ministry in the community of Los Banos. Nominated in July of 2000 by the Los Banos Enterprise newspaper as one of the city's Friendliest Churches, our people are committed to encouraging the families of Los Banos to a greater awareness of Christ.

At Calvary Baptist Church you'll find people committed to Christ and His teachings.
Calvary helps people realize how special life is and how the Bible gives encouragement to be all we can be. In a relatively relaxed and informal atmosphere, Calvary's stated goal is to share the Good News of Jesus one person at a time. And through our missions giving program, Calvary maintains an active role in national and international missions.

    What We Wholeheartedly Believe

The following statement of principles is condensed from the Baptist Faith and Message. For the full text of this document including Scripture references, click here.

    The Scriptures
The Holy Bible was written by men divinely inspired and is God's revelation of Himself to man. All Scripture is a testimony to Christ, who is the focus of divine revelation.

    God
There is one and only one living and true God. God reveals Himself to us as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

    Man
Man is the special creation of God, made in His own image. By his free choice man sinned against God and brought sin into the human race.

    Salvation
Salvation is offered freely to all who accept Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, who by His own blood obtained eternal redemption for the believer. There is no salvation apart from personal faith in Jesus Christ as Lord.

    The Church
A New Testament church is an autonomous local congregation of baptized believers. Each congregation operates under the Lordship of Christ through democratic processes. In such a congregation each member is responsible and accountable to Christ as Lord.

    Baptism and the Lord's Supper
Christian baptism is the immersion of a believer in water in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. It symbolizes the believer's faith in a risen Savior, the burial of the old life, and the resurrection to newness of life in Christ Jesus. The Lord's Supper is a symbolic act whereby the church, through partaking of the bread and the fruit of the vine, memorialize the death of the Redeemer.

    Evangelism and Missions
It is the duty and privilege of every follower of Christ and of every church of the Lord Jesus Christ to endeavor to make disciples of all nations.

    Stewardship
Christians are under obligation to serve God with their time, talents, and material possessions. Christians should contribute of their means cheerfully, regularly, proportionately, and liberally for the advancement of the Redeemer's cause on earth.

    Social Order
Christians should oppose racism, every form of greed, selfishness, and vice, and all forms of sexual immorality, including adultery, homosexuality, and pornography. Christians should provide for the orphaned, the needy, the abused, the aged, the helpless, and the sick, and contend for the sanctity of human life from conception to natural death.

    Religious Liberty
Church and state should be separate. The state owes to every church protection and full freedom in the pursuit of its spiritual ends. Civil government is ordained of God.

    The Family
God has ordained the family as the foundational institution of human society. It is composed of persons related to one another by marriage, blood, or adoption.

Marriage is the uniting of one man and one woman in covenant commitment for a lifetime. The husband and wife are of equal worth before God, since both are created in God's image. The marriage relationship models the way God relates to His people.

Children, from the moment of conception, are a blessing and heritage from the Lord. Parents are to demonstrate to their children God's pattern for marriage. Parents are to teach their children spiritual and moral values and to lead them, through consistent lifestyle example and loving discipline, to make choices based on biblical truth. Children are to honor and obey their parents.

    Guidelines for Communion

Calvary Baptist Church welcomes all people to attend both regular Worship Services and for believers to participate in our monthly observance of the Lord’s Supper. We practice what is known as closed communion, meaning that in keeping with the practice of historic orthodox Christianity and based upon considerations listed below, participation in the ordinance of The Lord's Supper is limited, and not open to all.

    The Lord's Supper
When Jesus instituted the Lord’s Supper in Matthew 26, He clearly said “This is My blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.” We believe that genuine repentance is necessary for the proper receiving of the Lord’s meal. Paul warns in 1 Cor. 11:27 that, "Whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the Lord.” Furthermore, Jesus instructed His disciples to “Take and eat; this is MY body" and to “Drink from [the cup], all of you. This is MY blood.” Says Paul in 1 Cor. 11:29, “Anyone who eats and drinks without recognizing the body of the Lord eats and drinks judgment on himself." Acts 2:42 describes the early Christians as devoting themselves “to the breaking of bread and to prayer.” Paul asks in 1 Cor. 10:16&17, “Is not the cup for which we give thanks a participation in the blood of Christ? And is not the bread a participation in the body of Christ?”

    Guidelines for Communion Observance
While Scripture declares that the Lord's Supper is a great blessing, it also warns of great danger for those who do not receive it properly. For this reason Calvary Baptist Church has established the following guidelines for Communion.

We welcome to the Lord's Table:

    Baptist Associations

Although autonomous and independent, Calvary Baptist Church is pleased to take part in an association of local Southern Baptist Churches known as the Central Valley Baptist Association, which in turn is a part of the statewide California Southern Baptist Convention. Each of the state conventions is a part of the overall Southern Baptist Convention. Although cooperating together, each church, association and convention in the Southern Baptist denomination is free to act autonomously and independently from one another.
